Manic Monday #197

Whew! It's been a while since I've played along with Manic Monday. You can check it out here, if you'd like!

Now, on with it:

Growing up, what was your favorite sitcom?

Family Matters, for sure. I LOVED that show. I loved the way Carl and Harriet said their names. I loved all the attitude Laura gave. And Steve Urkel and his antics. I loved it :)

What's your idea of a romantic date?

One that doesn't involve puppies.

But seriously. I think anything that is designed so that you and the other person are the focus is romantic (ie, not a movie). How can you be romanced when you aren't interacting?

What are you most afraid to lose?

My sanity! to the puppy! She tries harder and harder every day to be a good dog, and she just isn't good at being good yet.

No, but really. I'm afraid to lose my family - Brian and the dogs (yes, the dogs are my family). I would be shell-shocked for a while if I lost Brian, and I would be really really sad without the dogs.

Also, my library card :) Because Denver has an AWESOME library system!

Manic Monday #185

It's Monday!  And that means it's time for another Manic Monday post.  This week's MM is coming up in the evening, for a change of pace.  At least, that's what I'm going to pose this late post as.  Here goes!  And of course, please play along here.

What word describes you best?

ooooh..just one word?  I'd really like to do some kind of deep philosophical cop-out and say something like 'myself' - but that's lame.  I think one word that describes me well, if not best, is actually introverted.  I am really introverted, and this is a major driving force behind what matters to me, and in a large part it shapes who I am.  Because I'm introverted, I want to be home a lot, and because I spend a lot of time at home, I want my home to be a nice, warm, welcoming, interesting place.  Because I'm introverted, I limit the number of people I spend time with, and the friendships I do have are really meaningful to me.  To pass the time, I might knit or sew or write or read - solo, quiet activities.  I have an interest in photography - always looking and observing, less inclined to be a part of the action and more inclined to watch the action and enjoy it from my own perspective.  You know, that kind of thing.

What drives you every day?

A 2001 Toyota Highlander.
Jokes aside, I don't know.  I love my job, I like getting up in the morning and going to work.  But career isn't what drives me.  I don't know what drives me, really.  Just a resolute understanding that no matter what, this is life and life goes on.

Where do you want to retire?

Oh!  I know this one!  Hawaii!
Or maybe Alaska!!
Or maybe a yurt in New Mexico!
Or a house boat!
Or a beach house on the rocky Maine coast!

oooh...I don't know.

How about you?

Manic Monday #174

It's been a while, and I'm behind the times. Nevertheless, here is this week's Manic Monday! Play along here.

What is the longest love relationship (partner) you have had, and if it has ended, why?

The longest relationship I've had lasted about 4 years, with the last year of it being somewhat 'undefined.' It ended because he is a jackass and I wasn't ok with it any longer. When people ask me what happened, I just say this: that our relationship was great while we were in college, but it didn't work when we started transitioning to the real world. A lot of relationships are like that. You change in college, you change when you're finding your way after college. Our changes weren't compatible. Plus, the older he got the more of a tool he became.

Incidentally, I was with that guy longer than I've been with my husband :) And I'm way happier and better off.

What is on your bedside table?

I am currently reevaluating the things I want to have on my bedside table, so this list might shrink. But with that said, my bedside table currently holds a 3-wick candle with a YUMMY smell, my iHome ipod dock/clock radio (which needs replacing because the buttons don't work most of the time, argh), a framed picture of Brian and me on our honeymoon, a framed letter he wrote me shortly after we started dating (so sweet!) and the stack of books I'm reading or hope to be reading soon. My faithful copy of the American Heritage Dictionary is hanging out there for now, too, in an effort to continue recouping the vocabulary I lost with the head injury.

How many pillows do you have on your bed? Do you make your bed every day?

I sleep with one pillow, Brian sleeps with 2. Along with those, I have 3 decorative pillows that I put on the bed most days. No shams, no major foofiness. Plain light quilt that coordinates with the sheets and pillowcases, and the sometimes-present 3 decorative ones. Love. We make the bed almost every day; a lot of times, I'll go in there to make it and Brian will already have straightened the covers! Again with the sweetness. It's so much easier to make when there's no fuss - he doesn't feel alienated, girlied-out, or overwhelmed/put off with ridiculousness, but if I feel like adding 10 seconds of effort, I can toss the pillows on top and get my cuteness fix. It works (well) for us.

This week's Manic Monday questions:

If you joined the circus, what act would you most want to perform?

I'd want to be either an acrobat, or the lady who plays with the elephants. Those things are cool! And this may or may not be a response to the novel Water for Elephants :)

Would you generally be overdressed or underdressed at a party?

Ick, on the hit-or-miss scale I am almost always a miss. And sometimes it's because I'm overdressed and sometimes it's because I'm underdressed. Or dressed in the right level of dressiness but my actual wardrobe choice is a bomb. Things I think are cute end up not being cute. I am not very good at dressing myself.

Do you feel that children should be sheltered from unhappiness?

No. I think kids need to learn to be disappointed, angry, uncomfortable, etc. I think the notion that 'everybody wins' and 'there is no best and no worst' are doing no favors. Kids are people too, and I don't think youth means you get an exception to being let down by life.

Play along here!

What's the best summer job you ever had?

The only summer job I ever had was hostessing at a 'fine dining' chain restaurant. I hated it. I hated it with a passion. It was so bad. The serving staff was annoying and whiny, the four (FOUR!) managers each had a different viewpoint on what I should be doing, how I should be doing it, how many people I should seat, whether or not to follow the new regulations...I would be obeying one, only to get chewed out by the other and while being chewed out, a third would come and seat another family with NO regard for what was going on in the restaurant. It was miserable. I cried. I occasionally made servers cry. I got yelled at a lot, and when I wasn't being yelled at, I was being ignored and/or talked about. Which did nothing to improve my sheer incompetence. How I could have been so bad at seating people at tables, I do not know, because I am a rather competent individual. But oh dear lord, was that a dreadful experience.

Y'all. It sucked. It was terrible.

I went on a family vacation sometime toward the end of July, for a week, and toward the end of the trip when I called to find out what my shifts were for the coming week, I was put on hold, transferred twice, and then finally informed that I had been taken off the roster. PEOPLE. They TOOK ME OFF THE ROSTER and never even bothered to TELL me! I was relieved, to say the least, once I was done being pissed off.

Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.

The worst date I ever went on happens to be the first time I ever got dumped. We were at Carowinds (like Six Flags or Busch Gardens minus the animals, for all you non-Paramount Parks people) and we were 17. It was the weekend after our 2 weeks of band camp, and senior year classes started at some point in the week ahead. I'd taken him to the park because I had a season pass and some guest tickets to use up. We were having what I thought was a pretty good day, but after a few hours we made our way out of the park, and I noticed he wouldn't hold my hand or look at me or anything.

Once we made it to the parking lot, he broke up with me. He told me that while we were waiting in line for concessions earlier that afternoon, 'The Holy Spirit' told him it was time to end our dating relationship.

The holy spirit, my foot. More like..well, nevermind.

We'd been dating for something like 7 months, and we'd been best friends for about 2 years previously. Our relationship was far from perfect and I'd been through the whole breakup debate myself, but I (being one to forgive too easily and be excessively hard on myself) decided I was being too sensitive to his 'flaws' and that I should stick with it. The fact that he had clearly taken an interest in someone else (a freshman, mind you) had sent me into an even fiercer inner debate in recent days. I had decided to break up with him, but my mom convinced me that doing so just before classes started was cruel or something like that, so I figured I'd wait it out a little longer and see what happened. Well, I got ditched for a 14 year old. That's what I got for caring, I guess.

Did I mention that we'd driven to the park together? In MY car? Which meant that I had to sob my way home, cooped up, with him right there next to me? And that it was a 45-ish minute drive? Mothers: teach your sons not to do this to a girl. Of all the memories I ever made with that person, the only one I remember is THAT one.

He was one of those weird cases who was a great friend - very loyal and dedicated and easy to get along with - but a terrible boyfriend - demanding and pushy and 'I am the MAN and you are the WOMAN and this is how it shall be.' AND, he really did not get why his dumping me for someone else and then making out with said other person all over school caused me to lose interest in our friendship.

From what I hear from our mutual friends, he did some major growing up in the years during/immediately after college. And he recently got married, so props to him!! I still can't pass a car of the same make/model that he drove without chuckling, though.

Do you think the age for a driver's license should be raised (currently 16 here in the U.S.)?

I go back and forth on this. On the one hand, I say YES, teenagers are stupid and reckless and 16 is so much younger these days than it was in decades past, and look at the accident rates and blah blah blah. On the other hand, I do realize that I have never yelled at a 'stupid kid' on the road. Most of the people who I see behaving badly behind the wheel are either in college or are middle-aged. And we do NOT need to raise the driving age to 50, I promise.

Ultimately, though, I think all the rights, responsibilities, and privileges of 'adulthood' need to be bestowed at the same time. This means everything from voting rights, to income tax, to driving, to substance acquisition, to eligibility for the draft and for marriage licenses, should hit at the same time. At age 16 you're old enough to drive, pay taxes, and get married, but not old enough to vote or drink a beer? Come on now.

manic monday #162

Another edition of Manic Monday, this time on a Monday for realz!  You can play along here (and whenever you'd like).

Do you recycle? Why or why not?

We recycle.  It seems to be the responsible thing to do.  And we're fortunate to live in a city that makes it very easy on us.  I'd like to do more - ie composting - but for some reason it's very intimidating.  So for now, I throw food scraps out in the 'woodsy' area of the yard for the animals to munch....bizarre, I know.  But it makes me feel better.

Would you rather be a pirate or a prince/princess?

I prefer the idea of being a pirate because they're more fun, but I think really I would rather be a princess.  I am quite fond of indoor plumbing and personal hygiene, thank you,

Are you into astrology? If yes, how does it affect your life?

Not into it at all.  Not even a little bit.

The return of Manic Monday!  Play along here.

How often do you change your toothbrush?

every 6 months or so.  sometimes more 'so' than is probably recommended.  I've been somewhat misbehaving in the whole 'dental' arena the past couple of years...but I PROMISE I am going this year!

What is your favorite item of clothing to shop for?

I love dresses and skirts...and I loooove shoes.  Shoes are clothing, right?  This is the most fun time to shop for dresses, too, with the weather warming up and everything!

Do you use social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.)? Which do you use most often?

I'm on Facebook just about every day.  I have an old myspace page, too.

Manic Monday #158, but on a Tuesday

What would you do with an extra hour each day?

I don't know!!!!! I've received 9 or 10 extra hours each day, now that I'm not working (ack!) and I'm trying to figure out how to get myself on a schedule and stick to it.  We'll see how this thing goes...we'll see if the kitchen gets finished, the spring cleaning gets done, the car gets repaired, Eli gets his bath....  we'll see if it all happens :)

Do you wear a watch? If so, tell us about it. If not, how do you keep track of time?

I don't wear a watch, but I go crazy if there isn't a clock within eyesight.  I'm pretty good at estimating what time it is.  Knowing exactly what time it is gets a little tricky (and maybe drives my mr. prompty-prompt husband a little crazy).  I would seriously benefit from a clock in the bathroom, that's for sure...

If it was possible, would you want to know how many days you had left to live?

I've been thinking about this topic for a little while now, and I DO think I'd like to know.  What can I say, I've always been deadline-oriented.

What's one of the simple pleasures in your life?

I always have a point to have chocolate squares or nuggets or something in a candy dish within reach. I do this for two reasons. 1 - I love chocolate, and it's a great pick-me-up. 2 - when I have chocolate readily available, I don't crave it as much and I actually end up eating less. No more running to the CVS and inhaling the first giant-size bar I can get my hands on. It's like that children's book, Sleeping with Bread, minus the desperate struggle for survival and whatnot.

What do you like to snack on when you watch a movie?

Either popcorn (REAL popcorn, not the microwave stuff) or a bowl of cereal. Right now I'm into Cap'n Crunch, although I feel a Raisin Bran kick coming on.

If you were a Survivor contestant, what would be your luxury item?

I am WAY too hip to watch Survivor OR to grasp any allusions to its workings. (Also...doesn't the concept of a luxury item defeat the purpose of Survivor? I've never seen an episode, but really...I'm just saying is all.)

Manic Monday #155

Play along here!

Of all your favorite foods, which one would you find the most difficult to give up for the rest of your life?

This one's easy. Chocolate. Not many days go by when I don't wish for chocolate. Close second would be 'good New York cheesy pizza.'

Which month of the year do you think best describes your personality?

March. Still cold enough to be grumpy and wanting to hibernate, but with some snatches of fun every now and then.

If you could be a contestant on any game show, past or present, which show would you pick?

When Marcus and I were little, we watched this cool sibling gameshow too. I don't remember what it was, but it was almost like the newlywed game but for siblings. And it ended in this crazy shopping spree for all these fancy toys. What could be better???

Manic Monday #153

What's the most embarrassing song on your iPod (or music collection)?

This one's a toss up between Brian Adams and Brian McKnight...two of their greatest hits albums. I got each of these albums for one song (Summer of 69, and Anytime)

I used to have Meatloaf's (greatest song ever) Confessions by the Dashboard Light. I miss that song....Brian doesn't, I'm sure.

How much time do you spend each day in your commute? (Or if you don't work outside the house, how much time do you spend in your car or other preferred mode of transportation?)

Not long! I'd be an unhappy camper if I had a long commute. Right now I'm working downtown, and I'm not in the car more than 10 or 15 minutes. That's about as long as I can handle without feeling like I'm wasting my life. I generally have another 5 or 10 minute walk from the deck to the building - and then a 5 or 10 minute wait on the elevator, because the of the 6 main elevators in the GAB, only 2 go to the floor where I work. Most people don't seem to realize this.

What's your favorite wardrobe item and why?

I have these grey round-toe shoes with kitten (short) heels. They have black and silver embroidery and these dark silvery-black sequins. Hard to describe...but so fun to wear. I got them on ebay for 99 cents (and $15 shipping, har). Sadly, they're starting to fall apart and I haven't been able to find an appropriate replacement. I've never seen anything like them. LOVE.

Manic Monday #151

From the Manic Monday site:

What do you do to make yourself feel better when you are sick?

Live in PJs.  And eat cereal.  And watch bad movies.

What is the most amazing weather you've ever seen?

Winter 1998 - Austria.  It was so cold, and there was snow everywhere, and mist in the valleys.  It was crisp and sparkly and I will never forget it.

Do you listen to music or talk radio in the car?

Music.  I'm ok with talk radio if it's on, but I won't seek it out.

Manic Monday #147

If you were at a friend’s house for a holiday dinner and you found a dead cockroach in your salad, what would you do?

Cry.  Probably wail, in fact.  Then run to the kitchen, or some other room, wait for the hostess to dig me out of the corner I was cowering in, and then try to get the words out without having a stroke, all the while feeling extremely guilty that I couldn't just keep it to myself.

If you could put anyone you know on Prozac, who would you choose?

Not sure about this one.  Maybe my brother's dog.

How do you feel about public displays of affection?

Holding hands is ok....otherwise, get a room!  Unless it's your freaking wedding day, nobody wants to see you making out.

12.15.2008

Manic Monday #146

Have you ever returned an item to a store for a refund after having used it?

Not unless it was defunct....

You are going out for the evening. If your partner objects to what you are wearing, would you change your clothing?

Probably - I'm not too attached to what I wear, most days, so if he doesn't like it, then it's no biggie for me to go change.  I won't change if I like what I wear, though.

What item that you don’t currently possess would you most like to have in your home?

Wall-to-wall built-in book shelves.  For sure, most definitely.

Although a little less of everything and a little bit more of some good old-fashioned order would be nice... :)

12.02.2008

Manic Monday #144

It's "Cyber Monday" today, the ceremonial kick-off of the holiday online shopping season in the United States. Do you do much online shopping, holiday or otherwise?

I don't do much shopping at all.  I do a little bit of online shopping - I used to do a LOT more.  I've cut way back on all fronts, though.  Nothing against it.

Are you a Mac or a PC user? Why?

After a few good PC years in college, I made the switch back to Mac.  I couldn't have been happier.  I've always been a mac user at heart - mostly because my mom was Apple Computers Employee #715, back in the early 80s.  I sometimes wonder what computer I'd be using now, if this hadn't been the case.  I have a first generation MacBook that I love - but I do covet every new model.

What website do you spend more time on than you care to admit?

The Bold and the Beautiful online videos. I've watched on and off since I was in HS.  At first it was a mother-daughter thing, and now....maybe I shouldn't post about it.

11.24.2008

manic monday #143

Do you ever talk to yourself out loud? What do you talk about?

Yes, I talk to myself out loud a lot, usually when I'm under some kind of duress but without the threatening kind of pressure - you know, when the soft deadline is coming up and all of a sudden the computer is wonky, or the Tony Booth said something on the radio that makes me laugh and then I mention how ridiculous it is that I'm laughing at the radio.  I'm almost always talking about the immediate circumstance or situation, and I'm generally yelling at page design software.

What stresses you out?

A lot of things stress me out - I tend to be overly anxious.  For a long time, it was (a distinct lack of) money and the trouble I had finding gainful employment.  Right now my big concern is the same as many - financial stability for the next year or so.  I work for a nonprofit, so job security is not assumed, and Brian is in school right now and we don't know what his prospects will be next fall when he's job-hunting.  You know, the usual.

What are your secret talents?

I asked Brian what he thought my secret talent is.  His immediate response was that I don't stick my elbows out when I do my gun pose when I'm pretending I'm Scully.

Yeah, I don't know where that came from either.

But I should note that he also said 'baking things of glory.'  He also calls me the Coupon Queen.  I'm glad he appreciates my frugal sensibilities, though maybe his estimations may be a bit high :)

Also, apparently I make phones repeat themselves.
